It's very unlikely that another saxophonist existed in the entirety of New York City that was as busy as King Curtis was in 1960 - and for that matter, for the years before and after. His diamond hard yakety solos were crucial to the rock and roll success story of the Coasters, and King's instantly recognizable horn graced countless more 50's and 60's R&B platters as both bandleader and sideman. His presence in the jazz field was also solid as he built a reputation at the turn of the decade as a serious saxophone player.
